Around the Music Festival

The Bayreuth Festival (Bayreuther Festspiele) in Germany has announced its performance lineup for 2027. There will be no production of 《Der Ring des Nibelungen》 that year—the new production is scheduled to begin in 2028—with the new productions for 2027 consisting of 《Lohengrin》 and 《Parsifal》. These will be accompanied by revivals of 《Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg》 and 《Tannhäuser》.

The new productions will be directed by Ilaria Lanzino for 《Lohengrin》 and Ersan Mondtag for 《Parsifal》. Tarmo Peltokoski, aged 27, will conduct 《Lohengrin》, surpassing the record set by Lorin Maazel—who made his festival debut at age 30 in 1960—to become the youngest conductor in the festival’s history. Michael Spyres takes the lead role, joined by Elsa Dreisig, Judit Kutasi, and Jordan Shanahan.

Meanwhile, 《Parsifal》 marks Mondtag’s debut at the festival. The cast features Piotr Beczała in the title role, with Michèle Losier as Kundry and Mika Kares as Gurnemanz, under the baton of Christian Thielemann.

《Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg》 will be conducted by Simone Young, with a cast featuring Michael Volle, Klaus Florian Vogt, and Vida Miknevičiūtė. 《Tannhäuser》 will be conducted by Thomas Guggeis, marking his festival debut; Guggeis is a highly promising young German conductor who has served as General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera since 2023.
