The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra of Norway has announced that it will appoint Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund as its principal conductor. Her term will be four years, starting in August 2027.
The position had been vacant since Edward Gardner, who had held the position since 2015, retired at the end of the 2023/2024 season. This will be the first time a Norwegian has held the position of principal conductor since Carsten Andersen retired in 1985.
Berglund is a 36-year-old born in Trøndelagh. She studied cello with Truls Mørk at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and conducting with Ole Christian Ruud before becoming a conductor.
After serving as principal guest conductor of the Norwegian Christiansand Symphony Orchestra, she has been principal guest conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in the United States since the 2024/2025 season, and of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany since the 2025/2026 season.
