Cadiz is a port city in southwestern Spain, right by the Strait of Gibraltar. It was settled by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC and flourished as a trading port, and it was also the starting point for Columbus’s expedition to the New World. It is still a base for shipping out various products, including industrial goods and wine.
Cadiz is also known for its carnival. It is one of Spain’s most famous festivals, and is held every February, with the city overflowing with music, dance and colorful costumes. The city is also the birthplace of composer Manuel de Falla.
Falla was born in 1876. He began studying piano and composition in the 1890s, and while forging friendships with composers such as Dukas and Debussy, he created works that incorporated the passionate musical elements of the Andalusian dance “flamenco”.
In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, his close friend Federico García Lorca was shot dead, and in 1939, Falla went into exile in Argentina. He did not respond to repeated requests from the Franco regime to return to Spain, and died in Córdoba in 1946.
The following year, in 1947, his body was returned to Spain by the Franco regime and a state funeral was held, and he now rests in the crypt of the Cadiz Cathedral. The music festival was established in 2003 and begins in the second week of November. It is held around his birthday.
