A music festival held every year from the end of June to the beginning of July at Litomysl which is the birth place of Smetana of the Czech composer. Founded in 1949, the second oldest music festival in the Czech Republic.
Litomyšl is a small town in the eastern part of Bohemia, on the trade route connecting Bohemia and Moravia. A music festival is held at the main venue “Litomyšl Castle” which is also a symbol of the city.
The castle constructed from 1568 to 14 years old is featured that the entire surface is covered with 8,000 mural paintings. Both mural paintings are painted with white plaster over black plaster and drawn with a special technique called “spruffetto” which cuts out patterns, giving a unique expression to the outer wall.
In 1999 it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is also a birthplace of Smetana known as a symphonic poem “My Country” right next to the castle. The music festival is carried out using the special stage of the castle courtyard, the baroque theater inside the castle, the hall “House of Smetana” in the city, etc.
In addition to the performance of the opera, the orchestra concert, songs evening, chamber music and programs are extensive, and there are many guest performances by international artists.
