KYIV 〓 The Ukrainian National Opera resumed its activities

2022/05/23

The Ukrainian National Opera (Kyiv Opera), which had stopped performing three months after the start of the Russian invasion, resumed its activities on 21 May. The British newspaper The Guardian reported.

The first performance to resume was Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” which received a standing ovation that lasted for 10 minutes in the curtain call.

According to reports, the performance was limited to 300 people. In the event of an air raid alarm, the audience was immediately evacuated to a cloakroom in the basement, and the performance was staged while preparing for a Russian attack.

The staging staff and orchestra members who are fighting on the front line or in the Territorial Defence Forces were not present at this performance.

Minister of Culture Oleksandr Tkachenko told The Guardian that the National Opera would perform on weekend afternoons in the future.

This will be followed by Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko’s “Natalka Poltavka” on 22 May, followed by Verdi’s “Rigoletto” on 28 May and Pergolesi’s “La serva padrona” on 29 May.
