Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a city near the Austrian border. Munich is about 80 kilometers northeast and Innsbruck, Austria, about 35 kilometers southeast. Known for the 1936 Winter Olympics. The composer Richard Strauss (1864-1949) moved to a villa in the city in 1908 and spent nearly 40 years in the villa, where many works were born.
The music festival was founded in 1989 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the composer’s death. August Everding, who was the general director of the Bavarian State Opera at the time, was instrumental in its founding. Wolfgang Sawallisch, who was the music director of the Bavarian State Opera, became the first artistic director.
From 2009, Brigitte Faßbaender, who had been transformed from a soprano singer to a director, was appointed as second artistic director, and the Richard Strauss Institute also participated in the operation. Competitions are also held during the festival, and large-scale orchestra concerts are also held in the city hall “Alps Pitzhalle”.
In 2018, German conductor Alexander Liebreich became the third artistic director. The scale has also been expanded, with outdoor concerts in the courtyard of the Ettal Monastery and concerts at the Zugspitze station.
