It is about 600 km north of the capital Helsinki, a music festival held in Kuhmo, a small town near the border with Russia. The festival was founded in 1970. Seppo Kimanen, leading cellist in Finland, his wife and violinist Yoshiko Arai, their friends launched a music festival with the concept of “enjoy pure music itself, not by commercialism”.
The second half of July every year, about two weeks. There are participating students and educational program students who receive guidance from all over the world and a total of nearly 70 concerts are held in the venues of the town, such as chapels and school gyms, in addition to a special hall.
There are also many international guests such as Gidon Kremer, Pinchas Zukerman and Alban Berg Quartet. Also, volunteers gathered from various parts of Finland and local residents are behind the scenes, and it is also known in homely atmosphere, “I want to know more about existence but I want to keep it a bit secret” It is a music festival that will make visitors feel like that.
