A music festival held in Linz, a city associated with the Austrian composer Bruckner. The music festival was founded in 1974 with the completion of the Bruckner Haus, a new hall built to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth. Every year, concerts are held from September 4, the composer’s birthday, to October 11, the anniversary of his death.

Linz is Austria’s third largest city on the Danube River, about two hours by train from Vienna and one hour from Salzburg. Bruckner began his musical career in earnest as the organist of the old cathedral in Linz, and died in 1896 and was buried under the pipe organ of St. Florian’s Abbey in the suburbs. It is also known as the hometown of the master conductor Karl Böhm.

Sitting at the center of the music festival is the Linz Bruckner Orchestra, the resident orchestra of the “Bruckner House. Formerly the Linz State Theatre Orchestra, the orchestra has handled performances at the State Theatre under its current name; it made headlines in the 1980s and 1990s for its symphony recordings under honorary conductor Kurt Eichhorn, and since 2017 Markus Poschner has been its music director.

In 2022, there will be 33 concerts in 11 venues with approximately 13,700 visitors. There are many guest orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst, the Staatskapelle Dresden (Saxon State Opera Orchestra) under Christian Thielemann, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Vasily Petrenko.

The soloists also include Baiba Sklide and Chouchane Siranossian on violin, and Marta Argerich, Lilya Zilberstein, and Alexander Melnikov on piano.
