Brazilian cellist Antonio Meneses died on August 3 in Basel, Switzerland, from a progressive brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme. He was 66 years old. He released a statement via social media in early July, revealing that he had canceled all his schedules and was receiving palliative care at home.
He was born in Recife, a port city in northeastern Brazil, and grew up in Rio de Janeiro. He started playing the cello at the age of 10, and at the age of 16, he met Italian cellist Antonio Janiglo, who became his student and traveled to Europe, studying under Janiglo in Dusseldorf and later in Stuttgart.
He won the Munich International Music Competition in 1977 and the Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1982. Since then, he has continued to be active internationally, performing with famous orchestras and conductors.
He is also active in chamber music, and is known as the last member of the legendary Beaux Arts Trio with Menahem Pressler on piano and Daniel Hope on violin. He is also very active in teaching younger students, and has taught at the Queen Sofia Conservatory of Music in Spain and the Chigiana Conservatory in Siena, Italy, and since 2008 at the Bern Conservatory.
