The Hamburg State Opera has announced that Israeli conductor Omer Meir Wellber will be the next General Music Director (GMD), succeeding Kent Nagano, who has held the position since the 2015/2016 season, with a term beginning in the 2025/2026 season.

Wellber, 41, born in Beersheba, southern Israel, just began his tenure as music director of the Volksoper in Vienna in the 2022/2023 season, which runs through 2027. He is also music director of the Teatro Massimo in Italy starting in 2020.
