In 1998, China’s first opera theater “Shanghai Grand Theater” opened. The following year, in 1999, this comprehensive arts festival was founded, covering music, dance, theater and art.
Many viewed the establishment of an art festival under the direct control of the Chinese Ministry of Culture as evidence that the Chinese government had begun to take serious steps in cultural policy. It’s a big event with national prestige.
For example, looking at the 2017 music genre alone, the Line up are spectacular. Guest orchestras include the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (led by Andris Nelson’s), the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (led by Simon Rattle), and Dresden Staatskapelle (led by Alan Gilbert). Top 3 are participating.
On the other hand, as for the opera, the Czech Brno National Opera performed Janacek’s “Macropros Case”. The recital is also gorgeous with violinist Itzhak Perlman and tenor singer Jonas Kaufmann.
The hall situation in Shanghai has changed significantly in the last 20 years. “Shanghai Symphony Hall”, which opened in 2014, is the home of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and has a vineyard-style hall. “Shanghai Eastern Arts Center = OAC” has three halls, large, medium and small.
In addition, the former “Nanjing Grand Theater” built in 1930 was relocated and reopened as “Shanghai Concert Hall” in 2003. In addition, the “Poly theater”, where an opera can be performed, was opened in the fall of 2014.
