The music festival general director is a famous cellist Jan Vogler (1964-). He took over as the predecessor of Haenchen. Born in East Berlin, he was appointed as principal cellist at Staatskapelle Dresden (Saxon State Opera Orchestra) at the age of 20, the youngest ever in history. He left the position in 1997, but he is deeply involved with this region. In 1993, he founded Moritzburg Chamber Music Festival in the vicinity of Dresden, with Kai Vogler, the first concertmaster of the Staatskapelle. He still plays a role as Artistic Director there. Jan Vogler used to be a member of the Vogler Quartett at the beginning of his carrier, and the first violinist of the Quartett Tim Vogler (1968-) is his cousin.
The music festival was celebrating its 40th Memorial Year in 2017. The theme of the year 2017 was “Licht”, which means “light” in English, attempting to illuminate the charm of various music genres, works and music festival history. Vogler said during the interview, “The theme of ‘light’ describes the perennial human vision of the Enlightenment. Music raises awareness, connects people and creates new perspectives. It can make a big contribution to healing communities and societies.”
The general director Tim Vogler is not only an active performer, he is also active as a moderator of workshop concert as well as a host of party and dinner and so on. The whole staff members were actively working for the music festival to obtain international acknowledgement. Indeed, the festival is growing dramatically, comparing the data between year 2016 and 2017 alone. The number of spectators in 2017 increased from 48,000 to 54,000. The number of total performance: from 53 to 60, Ticket sales also rose 38% from the previous year.
