Marlboro is a small town in Vermont, near Canada, on the east coast side. In 1951, a music festival centered on chamber music was born with the advocacy of the name pianist Rudolf Serkin.

After then, Pablo Casals, Adolf Busch, Felix Grumiaux, Marcel Moyse and others are added, and it grows as a sanctuary of music.

The performance venue is like a gymnasium, where young artists learn from the teacher role players and refine their music and perform concerts with the performers. The period of music festival is about one month.

In 1964 Guarneri Quartet was formed and many artists grew up from here and scattered around the prominent string quartet such as Cleveland, Emerson, Juilliard, Takács, Tokyo, Vermeer.

It also features that many composers such as Samuel Barber, Elliott Carter and Aaron Copland have also participated. The artistic director served by Serkin until his death in 1991 has been handed over to pianist Mitsuko Uchida since 1999.
